 Brussels City supports Fuse !
Free entrance Sat 22 May!
(16/04/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas Deckmyn)
This is not a joke! jack_de_marseilleYes the Fuse will have a free entrance on 22 May ... and with an international deejay. Saturday 22, Fuse will be open all the ways and free... and not free by exhaustion (Fuses is full every week) but because the City of Brussels joined the club to make you this gift to celebrate the Fuse 10 years anniversary. An amusing idea with a real program: the fortiche Jack of Marseille (nice person, big knowledge, and with an insane talent), the very House and very Dutch Frederik (musician and deejay since 1989), and the residents Deg, T-Quest, Pierre and St Dic. For the tenth birthday of Fuse, the City thus wanted to claim high and strong that "electronic music is culture, and that good clubs in an urban setting are also the fibre of the modern society we live in". Isn't it beautiful? Sure it is, and it sounds very good for the future of the Brussels nightlife, Brussels_Brussel_Bruxelles_noctis.comthanks to the Mayor Freddy Thielemans. Thus now you can enter... you first, please. And be sure that it is not the end, because gossips talk about large electronic events, free and open air, in the old centre of Brussels and coming on short-term. [Gazon will come back next summer, but it's not what we're talking about right now].
Fuse permanently refunded by the social healthcare, one cannot test?

Sex Warnings in Ibiza (06/04/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas Deckmyn & Suzee Kay)
Ibiza along with other holiday destinations infamous for their "sex and music" reputations, are proving to be excellent distributions centres of STD diseases, HIV and of course AIDS being the worst. ibiza_arrivalA study on the sexual behaviour of young people between 16 and 35 years old was carried out on the Spanish party island between 2000 and 2002 (²). The results are worrying:
one man out of four and one woman out of seven had sexual intercourse with more than one person during their stay. Of these, 11% of the men and 3% of the women shared a bed with 6 partners or more. Even more worrying is that just 60% of the people surveyed, admitted to using at condom on every occasion, 40% only sometimes. ibizaThe party continued back home, as a small minority admitted to having several suspect partners on holiday, and multiple-intercourse once back at home.

This type of behaviour is an important factor in the international diffusion of STDs. The authors of the survey, which was carried out by Professor Mark Bellis, Director of Public Health at John Moors University, Liverpool, UK, wish to alert all young people of the risks of living such a "carefree" life. This type of happy-go-lucky philosophy is certainly contributing to the rising HIV levels in Western Europe of late.ibiza It has been quite some time since the alarm bells were first rung in the eighties and as a consequence, no one had unprotected sex with someone they had just met or were unsure of, unless they had a death wish.

However, public health authorities across Europe are becoming increasing alarmed at the rising HIV rates in young people particularly in heterosexuals rather than in homosexual people. ibiza_dancerAccording to UK Government official statistics by the end of 2002 the estimated number of people living with HIV in the United Kingdom was estimated at 49,500, an increase of 20 per cent compared with 2001. This figure includes undiagnosed and diagnosed people, with a third of these cases estimated as unaware of their condition. In 2002, 5711 new HIV cases were diagnosed. This was almost double the number diagnosed in 1998, which was 2818. The biggest component in the rapid rise in the numbers of new HIV diagnoses has been in heterosexually acquired infections. Since 1999 the number of new HIV diagnoses from heterosexuals have outnumbered those from homosexual and bisexual men.

ibizaSo the message is clear, it is time to ring those alarm bells once more. It is perfectly possible to be cool, have a good time on holiday and in life, provided you pay attention to your habits. Condoms should be part of your life and they will ensure you continue to enjoy life to its full potential! You have been warned.

(²) Ibiza annually attracts more than 250.000 tourists per annum. 1.500 people were surveyed during 2000, 2001 and 2002 at Ibiza airport before they departed home. More than 75% of the questioned young people had arrived in Ibiza without partner.
The "important minority" referred above composed 17 of those 75%.

 New for Pablo Discobar:
Laurence 'At The Villa' takes over!
Closing party Sat. 10 Apr.
(02/04/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas Deckmyn)
squarelight-at-pablodiscobarYou read well, the main discobar in Brussels is soon to change management... but we won't loose the hype. Back to the roots: in 1996, Fifi and Carlos join forces to create a deejay-bar in the centre of Brussels. The Dali's was not yet open, and the Chill-Out bar was closed since a couple of months.

In a very small area decorated with drawings, sculptures and colors, all the Belgian deejay scene went to play in front of 30 to 80 people, the place couldn't handle more. logo-pablodiscobarThere was even a temporary terrace for a summer, outer-parties in the street, side-events where they participated (on the Zeebrugge beach, or in some festivals)... and always a great atmosphere in the bar itself.

In 2001 Fifi left for new horizons, so Carlos kept the wheel and the spirit with the help of Caroline (the now famous barmaid). But it's time to put a change in the ways, and Carlos has new projects. He recently opened the Un Lombard with a friend, and is selling the Discobar away.

squarelight-at-pablodiscobarBad news? Not really, since it's a real night professional who's gonna take it over. A great organiser since 1989... guess who? Laurence Van Loo, the manager and creator of At The Villa since the late 80's. So... 1996-2004 and that's it for the first generation of Pablo Discobar... and the closure party will come on the 10 of April (limited access, for regulars only!!). Be ready for that night, and for the second generation of Pablo Discobar, with some changes but still with deejays. We heard that it could be more oriented on the daytime ... but it's not a confirmed thing, so let's wait and see. (50 rue du Marché aux Charbons - 1000 Brussels, Free Entrance)

Closing Party line-up (in order of appearance from 19:00 to 10:00 in the morning): ALL the regular deejays who spinned at Pablo Disco since years! Yves E Zone, Nicolas Deckmyn, Anthony, Gilles, Laurence Burlesque, Alex Klimow, Dorian, Bamboola Prod, Raoul, Régis, Bart, Rim-K, Isabel, Svenus, Laurent, Miss Sandra, Raph, Jim, Mr Suave, Geoffroy, Steph X, Matieu, Lorenzo Ottati, Murvin Jay. Come and share fun!

Antwerp is Burning Line Up (01/04/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas)
A good line up for Trance lovers indeed. So, 1 May at Sportpaleis Antwerp... in the Main room: Christopher Lawrence (USA), Sven Väth (Germany), Armin Van Buuren (Nl), Richie Hawtin (Canada), M.i.k.e. live, Moreland
Guy-Ohm in the lounge
Room 1 and 2: Rezza, Gaetano Parizio (Italia), Marco Bailey, Fred Baker, Armin Van Buuren & Mike
AIB_flyerPresales 30 Eur. VIP pass = 75 Eur. So we guess at the door it will be 45 or 50.

It's not that the line-up is deceiving, no. It's a nice one. But the poster and the website are promising so much... sooo much! Maybe the graphist saw it too big (opera intro ... "expect the unexpected" etc). But it's gonna be a huge Tech & Trance event for sure.

At The Villa Success leads to a 2nd edition (01/04/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas 'noctis' Deckmyn)
The first re-issue of At The Villa in its Vintage version at H2O in Pecq truly was a success. divino_sunFull nice people, great atmosphere... and the typical Laurence's touch for the night. At the desk, the public had no choice but dance, since Fred Nasen did great and Lorenzo Ottati made an amazing set that impressed many newcomers. So... a real success leading to a second edition in May with... with... Lorenzo Ottati and Cosy Mozzy (Dirty Dancing), and at H2O again. Keep an eye on this, a legend is back on the track.

I Love Techno in court for noise nuisance (27/03/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas Deckmyn)
Even there, the neighbours are watching...

The Public Prosecution Service for the correctional court in Ghent started early in February a trial about the 'I Love Techno' party of November 2001, concerning Flanders Expo and the ILT organizers (aka the Dance division of Clear Channel in Belgium). i-love-techno-2001 Both could have to pay respectively 107.548 Eur and 1,7 million Eur (the complete benefits of that night, so the Court tries to make them pay the whole amount). Both parties stand trial because ILT went way up to the so-told noise limitations.

It seems that more than 10 neighbours complained that night. A Police Report even says that in a house nearby Flanders Expo a window broke because of the strength of the vibrations. The Public Prosecution Service said Flanders Expo should have cared that the organizers respected the sound and environmental limits. The organizers also should have signed agreements with the DJ's and sound engineers.

i-love-techno-2001Both the organizers and Flanders Expo explained that the environment license of Flanders Expo does not mention dance festivals. By the way I Love techno is an exception which is not subject to the environment standardisation. Another argument is that all other editions of I Love Techno happened without problems. That proves there's nothing wrong with the building or the positive will.
But do you remember in 2001... the looong line to access ILT? There was in 2001 actually no more people than previous years. But early at night, the Police Force decided all visitors to be fully searched before the entrance. i-love-techno-2001So, between 22:00 and midnight, that led to a gigantic queue at the doors of hall 1, and those doors remained open. If the noise nuisance was a consequence of all that, is it really the organizers responsability? That's the question.

In the meantime, we now know that only one I Love Techno does 1.700.000 Eur global benefits (tickets & bar included). Of course from that money they have to pay the deejays, artists, barmen, security system, lights, decoration, etc... But it's still good to know.

 Hold-Up? No no... Psytrance! (23/03/2004 -- tekst: Bender-blup)
They thought it was a criminal reunion, so they moved big time... the Brussels Police sent 8 crews (!) to understand why some people were silently running into a building in the middle of a block full of offices in Brussels, and at the beginning of the night of Friday 28 Febr. What they found in rue de la Science was not exactly what they expected: just 50 boys and girls dancing on Psytrance in an open building which is currently in construction. So, nothing wrong... no neighbours to disturb, no fights, no destruction... only music.
The party has been stopped, but another has been planned for yesterday (22 March near North Station) and guess... it was nice. :)

That's one of the problems of keeping the event secret: external people (anyone... a neighbour, a security guard, really anyone) can of course imagine the worst, when it's actually only the best. That's probably part of the fun, for those who like their parties to be stopped. :/

FullMoonParty in Thailand (22/03/2004 -- tekst: Nicolas (thanx Nate!))
There's a magical party every full moon in Thailand on the island of Koh Phangan, and it's truly tempting for all European party people. Currently, the German Partysans are spinning there with some friends such as Toni Rios and Ricardo Villalobos, but it's the place for all kind of Trance too. The dedicated FullMoonParty website says:thailand_fullmoonparty_picture_by_marc-degeer "The first sign of our arrival to the party is the vibration of the bass beat felt through the hull of our speedboat. Having powered the twenty minutes from Koh Samui, we were now gliding into Haad Rin Bay, Koh Phangan to celebrate the Full Moon - Thai Style!
Haad Rin Beach is the regular venue for these lunar parties. This soft sanded beach, one of Thailand's jewels, is transformed every month into a huge party zone. Six sound stages, impressive neon installations, umpteen drink and food bars, fireworks and up to ten thousand party animals from around the globe make this celebration very special."

This should be enough for all of us to book a plane to Bangkok... but then how to go there? Depends if you take a flight or a bus. A plane from Bangkok to Koh Samui is +- 3400 Baht (70 Eur, 1h30 long). Or you can also take a bus from Bangkok to Suratthani. That's 380 Baht (8 Eur). thailand_fullmoonparty_picture_by_marc-degeer A ferry-boat starts then from Big Buddha Ferry Pier straight to Had Rin. The next editions will be on 5 April, 4 May, 3 June, 2 July, 30 August, 28 September, 28 October, 5 November and 5 December 2004.

For the deejays: don't take your vinyle records there, most of the soundsystem can't play anything else than cd's. Better to take some of your mixed cd's to promote yourself, and a box of cd's to spin here and there. But the scene there is not professionally organised as Ibiza can be, so don't be surprised by anything.
